Topping out ceremony celebrates milestone achievement for Edward Street Hospital refurbishment

A significant milestone has recently been reached in the refurbishment of Edward Street Hospital with Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Integrated Health Projects (IHP) hosting a ‘topping out ceremony’ to signify the highest point of construction of the new building.

To mark the occasion, the project leads of the Trust and IHP, the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, who are delivering the construction of the refurbishment, celebrated with staff and partners on their commitment to improving healthcare and the realisation of the significant impact the scheme will bring to local residents and the wider community.

With the topping out phase completed, the focus now shifts towards the interior construction and installation of advanced medical equipment.

The £50million investment was awarded to Black Country Healthcare as part of a national programme to eradicate dormitory wards. The plans will see the refurbishment and upgrading of the facilities available at Edward Street Hospital.

Plans include building an additional unit that will provide modern, en-suite accommodation for patients, and developing a therapies hub to support treatment and recovery.

Edward Street Hospital is due to re-open in spring 2025. This positive investment for older adult mental health services in Sandwell is set to make a significant difference not only to the patient and staff environment, but also to the quality of care provided.

Georgina Dean, Chief Finance Officer said: “We began this journey in Spring 2021, and this milestone is testament to the teamwork and perseverance that have brought us to this point, which is another step towards opening our doors to patients in need of mental health support.

“Edward Street Hospital is such a well-thought after facility in Sandwell, with a rich history and we are pleased that this investment will allow it to continue to serve the local community for many more years to come.”

Jim Cole, Divisional Director for Older Adults said: “I continue to be proud of our Older Adults services and teams across the Trust and we are looking forward to welcoming patients next year to the refurbished hospital.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved in this project to date. This celebration highlights the dedication and collaboration of a huge range of people including patients, Trust hospital staff and members of the public.”

Chris Milburn, P22 Project Manager, Archus said: “Archus are delighted to celebrate the topping out ceremony of the Edward Street Hospital. We are thrilled to see this facility coming to life, as it will greatly enhance the older adult mental health services in the area. A big thank you to all those involved as we continue the good work towards getting the service open for patients.”

Tony Grindrod, Regional Director for VINCI Building said: IHP are delighted to have reached this key milestone on the project. Our involvement in the project has been an absolute pleasure and the full team, including our designers and supply chain partners, have pulled together in a very positive manner. We look forward to the remainder of the project and delivering this facility to the client team.”
