Phoenix Unit, Tooting

The Phoenix Unit has transformed South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust’s provision of low secure services.

What a joy to see the finished product, with the patients enjoying their new accommodation.
Andrew Simpson, Director of Planning,
Phoenix Unit Tooting

Set in the landscaped grounds of Springfield University Hospital, this two-storey mental health rehabilitation unit replaces an outdated Victorian ward with modern high quality accommodation for 18 patients and associated staff. Each patient has their own bedroom with en-suite shower and toilet while day spaces include lounges and occupational therapy rooms.

An external courtyard provides access outdoors where patients assist with gardening maintenance as part of their therapy programmes.

With the design largely complete at the time of our appointment we worked closely with the Trust and user group to scrutinise and finalise the plans before sign-off. This was satisfactorily completed within programme, while at the same time various enabling works were carried out, including road and services diversions.

Following the successful completion of the project, IHP was entrusted with delivery of the Wandsworth Acute Unit for the Trust.
