Dudley Hospital

Sir Robert McAlpine was responsible for the concept development, detailed design and construction of major new hospital facilities throughout the West Midlands for the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust.

The scheme involved concentrating the majority of the Trust’s acute hospital services at Russells Hall Hospital which was refurbished and substantially extended to provide 757 beds.

From the start, regular workshops were held to ensure the full input of all stakeholders in the concept, design, construction and operational FM of the new facilities. As well as optimising the layout, this resulted in the efficient integration of services such as environment control and nurse call systems.

During construction effective supply chain management reduced waste, with detailed requirements for materials and deliveries coordinated with installation. Performance was measured, managed and improved using KPIs.

As the third hospital sequentially developed with architects Percy Thomas Partnership and health planners Leach Lovegrove, the project produced real benefits in terms of continuous improvement.

This Private Finance Initiative scheme also included the provision of two new ambulatory care centres at Guest and Corbett Hospitals to replace the existing, out-dated accommodation.
